Low-slung sport cars cope unrealistically well with off-road excursions but it’s a forgivable concession to reality considering how much fun these races are. The fast and frantic new cross-country races are probably my favourite race types.
While many events take place on pre-determined ribbons of road, plenty of Horizon 2’s racing is on the rolling fields and through the scattered forests of Tuscany and Provence.
The ability to plough through shrubs, splinter fences, and drive almost anywhere is a big shift in Horizon 2. The game’s 700-or-so events are also lucrative sources of Skill points, from the highly enjoyable Showcase races to class-based blasts across the countryside. Accumulating huge skill combos in Horizon 2 is a lot of fun and far more satisfying now that there’s more reason to do so. Where previously Skills points had a nebulous effect on your ‘popularity’, in Horizon 2 they unlock points you can trade for permanent perks like discounts on new cars or a small grace period at the beginning of an online game of Horizon 2’s tag mode, ‘Infected’. These rewards for impressive driving return from the original, although this time they’re integrated far better into the gameplay. These are great places to compulsively rack up your Skill points. In the online version of the game, races such as circuits, sprints, and cross country are playable against other players, along with other game types such as Infected and King. Players are also able to interact with each other in Car Meets, including sharing tuning setups and liveries. Car Meets are an online mode where players can meet up online and compare their cars, similar to “Forzavista” mode in Forza Motorsport 5.
These challenges are continuously updated to provide new challenges throughout the map. They can be completed in solo or co-op mode (when a player goes to the online version of the map, they can be completed with a random person or invited friend). Three groups of timed challenges for the player to complete, similar to the 1000 Club in Forza Horizon. Among new features in the game are “Bucket Lists” Forza Horizon 5 Events can take place at day or night, and a dynamic weather system was added for the first time in a Forza-series game. Players can explore the region, taking part in races and special events in order to advance through the game. The game has approximately three times more drivable area than that of its predecessor Forza Horizon, with events set in Provence, Liguria, and Côte d’Azur (Nice) along with scaled down towns of Sisteron and Saint-Martin-du-Var, among other regions. The player participates in the Horizon Festival, a fictional racing competition set within Southern France and Northern Italy. Gameplayįorza Horizon 2 is a racing video game, featuring an open world environment. What developer Playground Games has added, however, is a far richer world that’s exponentially denser with rewarding racing and exploration content. As usual, supercars feel crisp and sharp, SUVs feel suitably soggy, and everything seems honed to let you heave your cars into corners with two glorious fistfuls of opposite lock. Like Horizon before it, they all feel distinct from one another too, thanks to the Forza series’ familiar, top-quality driving dynamics. The eclectic roster of 200+ lavishly detailed cars here ranges from cult coupes to hypercars, and it’s the best line-up in the open-world racing business. Forza Horizon 2 rebottles the winning formula established by its predecessor, albeit with a heaped tablespoon of new and improved ingredients.
